Bingo Moving to a New Location |
After many years at our current Bingo location it has become necessary to make a change. This change is not being done rashly. Unfortunately, the writing has been on the wall, for several years, that we would likely have to leave our current location and that day has arrived. Our last Bingo session at our current location is Thursday, July 27th. The first session at our new location will be Tuesday, August 1st. I can imagine the first question many people will ask is, “Why are we moving?” The Department of Charitable Gaming (in Frankfort) requires that any group wishing to conduct gaming activities maintain a minimum of 40% profit. The LBA received notification in May that we had not achieved that goal for the 2016 calendar year and that we would therefore be placed on probation for 1 year. In order to be allowed to continue our gaming activities, during 2017, we had to look at our numbers and create a plan for how we would reach and maintain 40%. It came as no surprise to any of us (as I mentioned above, the writing has been on the wall for quite some time) that the most effective way for us to reach the 40% mark would be by decreasing our overhead. To that end, we were contacted by Jackpot Bingo, which operates on Eastland Parkway. They have offered us an extremely reasonable rent. When we used that rent figure in our calculations for the financial plan, it allows us to exceed the required 40% profit. Please know that we have looked at and called numerous locations on this side of town. Unfortunately, the rents at each of them are either too high to make them a feasible option or that too much work would have to be done to them to make them workable for Bingo. This move is not taken on lightly and although it is a further distance for most of us to travel we will only be holding our Bingo sessions on Tuesday nights, beginning in August. If you are on the regular schedule for Thursdays, please contact Dan Prevette at LafayetteBandBingo@gmail.com so that he can work on the schedule for our new location. We really do need everyone to help. We all want a wonderful band experience for our kids and many hands make light work. If anyone is interested in becoming our new Bingo Chairperson please contact me (LBAPresident1@gmail.com) or Kevin Fugette (kevfuge@gmail.com), our current Thursday night Bingo chairperson, so we can talk to you about it. It would be a HUGE help! Brenda and Ben Boggs went one night for Bingo, at Eastland, last year and said that most of the patrons at Eastland are the same folks we see on a regular basis. We have begun making announcements at our current Bingo location to our patrons and have told them how much we have valued their support of the band program and hope that they will follow us to the new location. We have explained why we are making the move and although many are disappointed they understand and have said they will come out and give it a try. If you’ve never been to Eastland, it’s a very clean, nice facility and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. For those concerned with safety, there will be an armed off-duty police officer with us during our gaming sessions. I have spoken with the “boss,” who is a sergeant (the other two officers who are in the rotation are both detectives, so all three have arrest powers) and they stay with us and are visible during the entire session. Hopefully knowing that will provide some peace of mind. Thanks to you all, for being such a wonderful community! It’s going to be a great year and I look forward to working with all of you. Best, |

New Parent Orientation Meeting on July 20 |
Welcome new families to the Lafayette Band Family! We look forward to meeting you and answering your many questions. There will be a New Parent Orientation Meeting on July 20 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm (during the Big Brother/Big Sister Picnic). This will be an opportunity to meet the band staff, LBA board members, learn about band camp, marching season etiquette, supplies your student will need for band camp and beyond, and your student’s first year in the Lafayette Band. Please come with your list of questions, as this will be the perfect time to get them answered. We will meet in the cafeteria. Everyone is welcome! This meeting will be different than the first parent meeting of the year for all parents. That will occur on July 31st and you will meet crew chiefs, learn about volunteer opportunities, and hear more about the specifics of THIS band season at that meeting. |

Important Medical Information |
STUDENTS CANNOT PARTICIPATE IN MARCHING BAND UNLESS THE PROPER MEDICAL DOCUMENTATION IS COMPLETED AND SUBMITTED. Medical Authorization Form The LBA Medical Authorization Form can be printed off the forms section on www.lafayetteband.org and then mailed to the address at the bottom of the form. If you prefer to save postage, forms can be turned in at the following: · Monday, July 10 or 17 @ Summer Band Practice · Thursday, July 20 @ Big Brother/ Big Sister Picnic · Band Camp Student Drop-off The Chaperone Team Must Monitor the Administration of All Over-The-Counter and Prescription Medications Over-The-Counter (OTC) Medications LBA’s medical form procedures have been updated to match the Fayette County School policy. The OTC Medical form must be signed by a physician and a parent in order for the chaperone team to administer any OTC medication you approve on the form. We cannot take verbal medication approval over the phone if you have not designated an OTC medication or if there is no physician signature on the student’s form. Prescription Medications The chaperone crew must monitor the administration of all prescription medications. Drop off all prescription medications that your child may need during practice in their original containers to a medical team representative in the student parking lot when you drop your child off for practice. If you have any questions you may contact Mike Booth @ mikeboothgm@gmail.com or Merrille Stevens at merrillestevens@gmail.com |
8oz Water Bottles Needed |
The chaperone crew is requesting 8 oz. Water Bottles for the Marching Season. Each year during band camp, we collect 8 oz. water bottles that are used before all performances. Each student receives a bottle of water to ensure they are hydrated prior to every performance. We use 8 oz. bottles to make them easier to carry with us and we find that 8 oz. is the ideal amount. We ask that each family help by donating some 8 oz. water bottles over the course of band camp. We will be receiving them when you drop off your kids at band camp and we are happy to receive them every day of camp. Thanks from your chaperone crew. If you have any questions you may contact Mike Booth @ mikeboothgm@gmail.com |
Personal Cooler/Thermos Water Jugs |
The chaperone crew always has ice water available at every practice. Every season we go through thousands of Styrofoam cups while students stand in long lines at the water jugs. We recommend that each student bring a filled cooler/ thermos jug to practice. The chaperone crew will re-fill the student’s jug after their break. There are a few stipulations: 1. The student’s name must be clearly marked on the jug. 2. Make your jug unique so you can easily pick it out. 3. The jug must be left next to the chaperone area if the student wants it re-filled after breaks. 4. All jugs must be picked up after each practice or the jug may be thrown away. |
Hydration and Nutrition Information |
In order to get the most out of your Band Camp experience, it’s important to be prepared. Listed here are some ways to make sure that you stay in tip-top shape during Band Camp. Fluid Intake: WATER, WATER, WATER
Nutrition: Everyone MUST eat breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. Please eat a healthy meal before you come every day. Contrary to what you may think, food on your stomach will not sit like a lump while you are marching. Your body needs fuel to perform at the level necessary for Band Camp. Avoid all caffeine, greasy foods, carbonated drinks with caffeine, excessive candy or sweets, and dairy foods. During the first week of camp, beginning July 23, you are “on your own” for lunch. You may bring a sack lunch or make arrangements to obtain lunch offsite. During the two weeks of full Band Camp, (beginning July 31) you can either bring a sack lunch from home or, we will have food trucks and different restaurants providing $5 lunches each day. Be on the lookout in next week’s e-News for a complete list with the menu for each day and ordering details. Students MAY NOT leave campus during the lunch break, during full band camp. Summer Conditions: · Wear sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Bring your sunscreen with you to re-apply during breaks. · Wear a hat: baseball cap preferred · Wear light colored clothing. · Always wear socks and tennis shoes (no sandals or flip-flops). · Expect high temperatures and humidity! Many hours are spent on the asphalt! |

Lafayette Band Parent Performance, Picnic & Raffle |
The 2017 Lafayette Band Parent Performance, Picnic and Raffle will be on Friday evening, August 11th. We’re doing things a little differently this year. Historically, we have held a small Silent Auction on Parent Performance night. This year, we will have one BIG silent auction at the Jazz Band Dance, later in the year. For parent performance night we will have our traditional picnic. More details about cost for the meal and timing will follow but please save-the-date. During the picnic we will be selling chances for 2 raffles, an “Hour in the Tower,” and a “Split the Pot” Raffle. Chances to enter either drawing will only be $1/each. The drawings will be held live at the football stadium, during the parent performance, and you must be present to win. Then, it’s time to see all the hard work our students have put in during band camp. This will be our first opportunity to glimpse this year’s show, as the band marches the first movement. We call it the Parent Performance but everyone is welcome – friends, family, and alumni – spread the word! |
