Lafayette Band Invitational Presented by Asbury University

The Lafayette Band Invitational on September 16 is going to be a fun and exciting day!  This is the second time we have hosted a contest and it is going to be “A Beautiful Day!”  There will be 8 well-known and highly successful bands participating and we anticipate several thousand people will attend the Invitational.  The information and online ticket sales for the Lafayette Band Invitational has been posted at www.lafayetteband.org/libc/

We need all families and students to volunteer to be a part of this great event!  There will be volunteer opportunities in concessions, ticket sales, parking, stadium ushers, band guides, and more!  The volunteer schedule will be divided into 3-hour shifts during the day and evening and designated for adults and students.  It promises to be a fabulous experience for everyone and a significant day in the great history of the Lafayette Band!

Parents and Students — Carefully review these instructions:

·         Bring money for gloves if needed.  $8.00

·         Have your band camp shirt to wear under your uniform.

·         Wear long black socks – plain, no stripes! (It’s good just to keep an extra pair of socks in your bag)

·         Bring the black shorts, deodorant, hand towel, wipes for your red bag.

·         If there is a problem with your uniform, see a member of the uniform team.

·         We always appear in public dressed in full uniform unless Mr. Smith or Mr. Bishop have informed the students otherwise.

Hair should not touch the collar when dressed in uniform, therefore, students with longer hair should bring items to secure their hair in a top knot or purchase a wig cap.  Wig caps can be purchased from the Uniform Team for $1 for a package of 2 caps.”

Have class – YOU are the “PRIDE OF THE BLUEGRASS”®! Always support other performing groups! Refuse to say anything negative, no matter what might be said to you.

This great money-making opportunity is back for Lafayette Band at the very popular “Downs After Dark” event on Saturday, September 23. Churchill Downs will donate $125 to LBA for each person who helps with the buffet and becomes a “meat-carver” on Millionaires Row. No experience necessary! Must be 18 or older. Shift is from 3pm to 10pm and includes training, dinner and a real chef’s hat! Sign-Up HERE. A brief online training is required prior to working. You will be sent the information about how to complete after you sign-up.

Several LBA parents volunteered at Churchill Downs in June and it was a great experience – the people-watching was fascinating! If you have been waiting for a way to get involved, this is it! Email John and Melena Dailey at LBAfundraising1@gmail.com for questions.

Medications for the Bourbon County Contest

If your child needs to take prescription or over-the-counter medication that we do not already have physician’s signature for during the day on Saturday you will need to complete and turn in the FCPS “Physician Order and Parent/Guardian Authorization Administration Form” found under the Downloadable Forms section of the Lafayette Website (www.lafayetteband.org).

On Saturday morning, turn in the completed form along with the medication needed for that day only in its original container to any chaperone at the blue building next to the practice field.

Please note that over-the-counter medications must be accompanied by a physician’s signature on the FCPS form noted above.  If a physician has already signed the LBA Medical Form then you do are not required to submit an additional form for OTC medications you initiated on the LBA Form.

Uniform News

SOCKS and SHORTS
Hopefully by now you have acquired LONG PLAIN BLACK socks and black (or another very dark color) athletic shorts for your marcher.  Remember, crew socks are too short….black dress socks or black baseball socks may be your best options.

GLOVES
Black gloves will be distributed BY SECTION to those that pre-ordered on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week at the end of rehearsal in the band room.
Tuesday:  Alto saxes, Low reeds and Baritones
Wednesday:  Flutes, Clarinets, Sousaphones and Trumpets
     Thursday:  Mellophones and Trombones
Gloves will also be distributed/sold prior to the football game on Friday.  Gloves are $8 per pair.  Gloves should be washed in cold water, do not dry.

MISCELLANEOUS
No visible jewelry or nail polish is allowed in uniform, so manicures and piercings this week might not be the best idea. Changing in and out of uniform is going to be a challenge this year. Marchers may want to consider bringing an extra dry-fit shirt (of any kind) to put over their heads to protect hair and make-up. Marchers might try to wear as little makeup as possible this year to avoid getting makeup on the black uniform top. Hairdos to contain hair in marching hats may need to be extra secure.  Sousaphones and front ensemble (pit) do not wear hats, and hair is not allowed to touch the collar of the uniform. Please make arrangements for a haircut if necessary.  MAKE SURE YOUR MARCHER HAS DEODORANT.

Red Bag Contents Checklist – please make sure names are written in shoes/shirts!

·         Long, plain BLACK socks – 2 pairs
